This festival, which was attributed to the children of the whole world by Mustafa Kemal Atatürk, was first celebrated in the first year of the opening of the Turkish Grand National Assembly. In 1935, the 23rd of April, the National Day combined with the National Sovereignty of the National Childhood Day which was declared in 1927, 23 April Children’s Day was formed as a result of this merger. During the 1980 coup, this celebration was officially named as April 23 National Sovereignty and Children’s Day 1980.

The reason why 23 April was accepted as a national holiday in our country is that the Parliament opened the same day of 1920. The parliamentary elections started with the declaration of Atatürk on 19 March 1920, and again the announcement of the opening date of the parliament was announced on 21 April. On April 23, 1920, in Ankara with the participation of parliamentarians Grand National Assembly of Turkey was opened.

Atatürk has always given importance to this holiday which is very important for Turkey and dedicated to children. During Children’s festivals, Turk Ocagi buildings, Halkevleri and Gazi Forest Farm are opened to children’s festivities.

The archival documents also show that the government always places great importance on the children’s day. For example, on April 7, 1932, “Due to the Children’s Day, a law order was issued on the admission of a stamp of love to letters and telegrams between 20 and 30 April” was prepared.

23 April, the day when our national sovereignty was declared, is essential for our country and will continue to be important for all these reasons. We would like to celebrate the feast of all our children and wish to build a better world for them. Happy 23 April National Sovereignty and Children’s Day!
