Meserret Kahvesi

Meserret Coffee; Located at the corner of Ankara and Ebusuud streets in Sirkeci, it was a frequent destination for writers and journalists. Among the regulars of the coffee opened in the early 1900s were writers such as Yaşar Kemal, Orhan Kemal, Sait Faik, Edip Cansever, Melih Cevdet Anday, Muzaffer Buyrukçu, Mehmet Rauf, Halit Ziya Uşaklıgil and Necip Fazıl.

When Orhan Kemal begins his many works at Meserret Kahvesi, he talks about the place as follows: “Meserret is the starting point of trying to extract my bread from Bâb-ı Ali”.

Hazzo Pulo

Hazzo Pulo Passage always has a different significance for literature lovers. The coffeehouse in this passage has been the place where literature has flourished throughout history. The fact that Ahmet Mithat Efendi has a printing house just above the passage constitutes an important place in this case. In Istanbul, where there are few printing houses, this printing house in Hazzo Pulo becomes the production hall of Tanzimat Literature. Literary writers such as the national poet Namık Kemal, Recaizade Mahmut Ekrem and Ahmet Haşim used to visit here every day. Almost all the Tanzimat scriptures come out of this passage.

The coffeehouse here is the meeting point of literary figures. Hazzo Pulo Passage has hosted businesses such as hairdressers, carpet shops, hat makers and tailors throughout its history. Namık Kemal printed the İbret newspaper in the printing house located in HazzoPulo Passage.

Pera Palace

Agatha Christie, the world-famous crime novel writer, visited Istanbul frequently between 1926-1932. It is rumored that the author made the works of his famous novel “Murder on the Express of the East” in room 411.

Ernest Hemingway, one of the world-renowned writers, was also a lover of Istanbul! The famous writer was staying at the Pera Palace Hotel during his Istanbul visits in the 1920s. During his stay at the hotel, he often spent time in the hotel bar.

The Swedish actress Greta Garbo, who made her name known to the whole world as the “Ice Queen”, came to Istanbul for the first time in 1924 for a film project. He stayed for 50 days in room 103 in the Pera Palace Hotel.

Mustafa Kemal Atatürk, the founder of the Republic, stayed at Pera Palace Hotel. Room 101 is known as the room where Mustafa Kemal Atatürk stayed during his visits to Pera Palace Hotel. During the most critical periods, he took decisions that were of great importance to the country during his work here.
