Famous People Of Pera Palace Hotel… Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis

Pera Palace Hotel, which was built in Beyoğlu, the heart of Istanbul, to host the valuable guests of the famous train Orient Express, has hosted many notable names to date. One of them was Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis, a former First Lady of the United States. During her visit to Istanbul, Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis preferred Room 612, located on the top floor of Pera Palace Hotel.

Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis was born on 28July 28 1929 as the first child of John Vernou Bouvier and Janet Norton Lee. In 1951, she graduated from George Washington University – Faculty of Letters. She also met John F. Kennedy, member of the House of Representatives, Massachusetts. When the couple married in 1953, Jacqueline was 24 and Kennedy was 36 years old. Their first child, who died at the age of seven months, later the couple had two children, a boy and a girl.

Jacqueline became the First Lady in the 1960 elections, by Kennedy defeated his rival Richard Nixon and became president. The young woman who attracted attention with her beauty was also worthy of this title. But Kennedy’s presidency did not last long. Kennedy, who was attacked on  22November 22 1963 during a visit with Jacqueline, died in the arms of his wife.

“I saw my wife die in my arms, blood is still on me,” said the young woman. After the death of her husband, she began to travel on various trips to forget all this. As the 60s continued with all the tremors, Jacqueline was able to impress everyone with her beauty and youthful appearance and was frequently seen in important invitations. While the young woman had not missed the sadness of her husband’s death, 3.5 years later, she lost her brother-in-law and close friend Robert F. Kennedy in an armed attack. Jacqueline, once again saddened by the sadness of this painful event, began to fear America with the influence of the paranoia.

First Lady Jacqueline once again married with Greek shipowner Aristotle Onassis in 1968. The couple’s marriage continued until Onassis’ death in 1975. In her last years, the young woman was known for her personal style and elegance, her contribution to the preservation of art and historical monuments.

Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis was diagnosed with cancer in January 1994 and died on May 19, 1994. After the legendary woman’s death, on June 23, 1994, Senator Edward Kennedy made the following remarks about her: “In 1963 she was too young to be a widow, now she is too young to die.”
