Poor Folk

“…It is through you that I began to read, you introduced me to the theatre, I learned to live through you…”

Makar Alexeyevich and his great love, who is also his relative, Varvara Alexeyevna, begin exchanging letters in the cold yet hauntingly bleak atmosphere of Petersburg. Fearing the  spread of rumors, they meet only rarely. Varvara, still a young girl of 17, is much younger than  Makar, but this does not hinder his unrequited love.

Despite her youth, Varvara has endured great pain and finds solace in Makar’s fatherly affection.  Makar, on the other hand, is a poor government clerk.

They send each other letters through their windows for months. Days chase months, and months chase seasons, as they write dozens of letters to each other…

And so, we witness this love-filled, yet heart-wrenching story.
