Lily of the Valley

A confession told through letters…

After a deeply sorrowful childhood, Félix leaves for Paris to pursue his education. However, due to unforeseen events, he is forced to flee and returns to his hometown of Tours, to live once again with his parents.

During a ball held in honor of the Duke of Angoulême, Félix falls deeply in love with a woman he has never met before. Overwhelmed by his emotions, this intense and unreciprocated love affects him to the point of physical illness. Concerned for her son’s wellbeing, his mother sends him away from the city so he may recover under quiet care.

While wandering through the countryside, Félix comes upon a house of extraordinary beauty, so captivating that he begins to wonder whether the woman he loves might live there. Fate soon reveals the truth: he encounters Madame de Mortsauf, the very woman who lies at the heart of his emotional turmoil, the Lily of the Valley.

Through a long and intimate letter written by Félix de Vandenesse to his fiancée, Natalie, the audience bears witness to his unhappy childhood and his profound, restrained love for the virtuous Madame de Mortsauf.
